I never considered myself a creative child or adult - always feeling like I had to get inspiration from others, look outside for ideas or try my hand at something someone else showed me. For some reason I thought being creative meant you had to have an original idea, come up with something imagined that has never been imagined before, something new and or unique or never been done before.
To my relief, I have since realised that there really isn't anything new under the sun - rather just new ways to create from the inspiration of others and or from within.
I have however always had projects on the go - including too many 'unfinished' or 'I'll finish it one day' projects. These projects have included sewing my own clothes, making raffia hats (when it was a trend), cross stitch, candle making, pastel art drawings, soap making, body care products, cooking, gardening, crochet, junk journal book making and I'm sure there are many more I have forgotten.
Create whatever you want, whenever you can.
Start small, keep going.

In my corporate roles I created or improved document templates, created order and organisation of systems for more efficiency and probably more that I haven't yet acknowledged.
Even though I had done all these types of 'activities' throughout my adult life, I never actually saw them as 'being creative' - I merely saw them as 'tasks' or 'to do'. Most of these activities were from a conditioned survival mind, a belief of 'because it's what you should do' and also from the example of my parents 'do what you can to make ends meet'.
It wasn't until I was undertaking my diploma studies and exploring my own self-healer path and listening to many podcasts on psycho-spiritual concepts, that I came across hearing about creativity as a remedy to what is called the mind virus - Wetiko.
Without going into too much detail on what Wetiko is (I find it a very fascinating topic), I understood quickly from a few podcasts that it - Wetiko, was evident in my life, in life around me and in my past.
Deepening my knowledge of this tied in very neatly with the teachings within my counselling course including The Work of Byron Katie - inquiry into your own beliefs and judgements - which often unconsciously plague us without our knowing and hinder our personal freedom in life.

Connecting all the pieces together, I could start to see how my old thoughts, old beliefs and judgements of others and self were ruling my world, consciously and unconsciously. I had no idea how far spread this Wetiko was within me or my life - I wasn't willing to let it rule all of my life for much longer. I could also see that I didn't really 'play' or do these 'tasks' with much joy or fun.
Learning that the remedy to Wetiko is to create, I re-discovered a new way to appreciate what creativity meant through a completely new lens and how it could be a remedy in my own life. From here I followed a surprising urge to re-discover what creating could be and how to bring it in to my life - for fun, for healing and re-connecting with parts of myself that had been long forgotten and left back in childhood.
When you begin to reconnect to that inner part within that knows joy, fun, happiness, playfulness in making up stuff, thinking silly things, giving it a go, turning it into a game - like we did as children - you begin to realise that this part of ourself is still alive but has been made small.
What makes it even more important to bring creativity into your life is the healing benefits it can bring to your nervous system and building new neural pathways which in turn lead you to start seeing life in ways you had never seen before - abundant, fulfilling and all yours to create!
An invitation:
Consider something you enjoy the freedom of creating - however you like to do it.
Feel into the enjoyment of the process of 'making it up'.
If it is not usual for you to create anything, start wherever you can
and make it as fun as you possibly can.
